The Reign In Spain Is Over
Spain have sacked Julen Lopetegui just before the World Cup because he has a new job to start when it is over. This may be seen as a negative, and surely upheaval of this nature cannot be good. There are also reports of players being unhappy, and it doesn’t typically go well when players are unhappy. On the other hand, Lopetegui signed a new contract just 3 weeks ago, so the anger at this is maybe somewhat justified.
In other news, congratulations to the U20 USWNT who won the Tournoi Maurice Revello Sud Ladies Cup in France, beating the hosts in the final. The future of US soccer is bright.
In other news there will be three hosts of the World Cup in 2026. Why not just have 24 countries get together and host it in a World Cup League? Three places taken up, one is really unlikely to have qualified, another hit and miss, and teams like Panama and Costa Rica are the most likely to miss out. Good US and Canada, but this hosting thing is getting a bit far.
